First- and Second-Fix Carpentry Explained

At Axiom Construction, we pride ourselves on our ability to communicate. In the pre-build phase, we understand that you want confidence and clarity before signing a contract. We avoid using industry lingo, but if we have no other choice, we go out of our way to explain everything.

First- and second-fix carpentry are core components of our service. To get your project off on the right foot, we have briefly explained what they involve below.

What is First-Fix Carpentry?

As the name suggests, first-fix carpentry is the first of two carpentry phases when constructing an extension or new build. It involves all the carpentry work required after the foundation installation but stops when the room or building is ready for plastering. As such, it usually starts from the frame (or shell) of the building to the point of decorating.

Common first-fix tasks include, but aren’t limited to:
  • Floating Floors

  • Studwork

  • Staircases

  • Exterior Doors

  • Internal Door Linings

  • Windows and Boards

What is Second-Fix Carpentry?

As the second phase of carpentry, second-fix work covers all the services needed after the plastering. During this stage, we ensure our house extensions and new builds in Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Newmarket and the neighbouring areas have the required woodwork finishes.

Second-fix services include:
  • Skirting and Mouldings

  • Door Lining Architraves

  • Internal Wooden Floors

  • Handrails and Bannisters
